I am having trouble getting answers to this......Are there any converters
other than RDL Generator from Hitachi or rpttoSQL that will convert rpt files
to rdl files? Those of you that have migrated from Crystal to MSRS, could
you please enlighten me on how you accomplished this?

Thanks

I think legally you can not create a tool to convert from crystal (.rpt)
format to rdl, even if you create it you can not sell that tool. Usually most
of the companies sells the "service" of report's convertion. ReportDoctor
sell the convertion's services.

Now Hitachi have it, I would love to see the terms and conditions for the
Hitachi's product.

Thanks
Jerry

From Crystal [Licence.pdf]

4.6.5 (Excerpt)
"End User agrees not to alter, disassemble, decompile, translate, adapt or
reverse-engineer the Runtime Software or the report file (.RPT) format"

"End user agrees not to use the runtime software to create for distribution
a product that converts the report file (.RPT) format to an alternative
report file format ... or product that is not the property of Crystal
Decisions"

I work for Hitachi Consulting and you're right on. We offer report
migration as a service using tools we have created. We cannot sell software
to do this for a number of reasons. Crystal and SRS reports are very
differnt in structure. The success of migrating a report depends on the
design of the original report. The fact is that if you want your users to
have a good reporting experience, in may cases you'll probably design your
reports differently in Reporting Services. There isn't a one-shot
conversion tool that will deliver consistent results for all reports. We
typically ask clients for some exempary reports so we can give them an idea
about what they're in for.

Hi. I run the website RptToRdl.Com (we used to be known as RptToSQL.Com), a service that converts reports from Crystal Reports into Reporting Services. At this time, we only charge $25 per report. We are a recommended ISV from Microsoft now for converting your RPT templates into RDLs.

Converting any digital media/file is not easily be possible but there is no such thing "illegal" if,

“Tool used for creating media does no more support features as described by vendor or
Created Media/File no more advantageous for your business or Tool used in crating media/file does not perform as expected and vendor asking you to pay more to make it work in it's original form or You buy or install patches or fixes to make tool work as expected.”

Note all software vendors ask you to agree with their terms and conditions but you have every right to upgrade your software with or without cost.

It is a myth to say “illegal” in converting digital media/file from one form to another.
